How long did the first Sugar Loaf cable car generation in Rio operate?

The first Sugar Loaf cable car system lasted 60 years (1912-1972). At the end of the ‘60s, it was time to modernize and replace it.

The new Sugar Loaf cable car system needed to offer the newer international standards of safety, quality, and service, and it needed to be faster and to have greater capacity to cope with the growing influx of tourists in Rio de Janeiro (from Brazil and from abroad).
