The low tourist season in Rio de Janeiro is on April, May, June, September and October. Any of these off-season months is a great time to visit Rio de Janeiro, which is by far the most popular and famous destination in Brazil.
There are several advantages and benefits when visiting Rio de Janeiro on an off-season month. The top two reasons are: there are just a few tourists and the weather is much more pleasant.
A few Tourists
Without a doubt, there are less tourists in Rio de Janeiro during the low season. This is particularly important when visiting classic attractions such as Christ the Redeemer statue and Sugar Loaf (although there is always a way around to beat the crowd).
However, bear in mind that Rio receives way less tourists than cities like New York, Paris, London or even Buenos Aires. In other words, the low season in Rio is really low if you compare to those cities.
Even in the high season the number of tourists you see on the streets of Rio de Janeiro is nothing compared to the number of tourists if you see, for example, on the streets of Rome or Barcelona.
Rio de Janeiro is becoming more and more in vogue though, and as it approaches the 2012 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games, the low tourist season will become more like a mid-season instead.
Mild Temperatures
The mild temperature in the low season months of April, May, June, July, August, September, October and even in November is enough reason to visit Rio de Janeiro. The temperatures on those months vary from the worse-case scenario 17° C (62° F) to 27°C (81°F), and sometimes slightly hotter.
On average temperature is around 22°C (71°F), which is enough to go to the beach, go sightseeing, or seating out at a cafe. And better yet, not humid. At night the temperature can drop a little bit, then you may need a pullover.
The bottom line is the low season in Rio has too major advantages: less tourists at tourist attractions, restaurants and hotels as well as an average temperature that does not consume your energy.
