Without a doubt Rio de Janeiro is safe for the Olympic Games in 2016. In fact, Rio is already safe nowadays — several years before the Olympics. By the time Rio hosts the Olympics, it will probably be one of the safest major cities in Brazil, if not the safest.
The Brazilian economy is booming, and Rio de Janeiro is one of the main cities involved in the process and benefiting form this record steady growth. Unemployment rate, for example, is one of the lowest in many years. Criminality decreases year after year. Locals are out, having fun, shopping, touring, and safely enjoying the attractions in Rio de Janeiro.
Four years before the Olympics we can already feel that hosting the games will be beneficial to the city and to many of its people. There is record of investments on infrastructure, transportation, tourist, safety, and on other sectors. Lots of people who had no job now have an opportunity right ahead of them, to follow a career and escape poverty or poor living conditions.
Besides the Olympics, Brazil will host the World Cup of Soccer (‘football’ in Brazil) in 2012. Visitors will need to travel to several cities in Brazil to watch the games, but safer than ever Rio de Janeiro will be without a doubt the center of the attentions.
