Is it safe to travel to Rio with children?

It is safe to travel to Rio de Janeiro with children. In fact, generally speaking, it is safe to travel to Brazil. Regardless of the age of your kids, you will feel that it was the right decision to bring the children along.

Rio de Janeiro is becoming increasingly safer in the last years, and I have witnessed more and more families travelling to Brazil.

I work as a private tour guide and have felt that a higher percentage of the requests for tours are made from families with children planning a trip to Rio de Janeiro. That’s a sign that Rio’s safety reputation has improved in Brazil as well as in important markets such as USA, Canada, Europe, and Asia.

If you travel to Rio de Janeiro with your children, you will need to use common sense when going around in the city. Among the safety rules that apply to Rio are:

Choose a hotel in a busy area such as Copacabana or Ipanema. Generally speaking, the busier the area, the safer it is. Well-located hotels in Copacabana are: Windsor Palace Hotel and Arena Copacabana Hotel. An excellent choice in Ipanema is Mar Ipanema. These hotels are not particularly special for families with children, but their location, quality, service, and price make them a good bet.

Prefer the streets, sidewalks, beach area with a high concentration of locals. Avoid deserted or less busy areas.

Avoid public buses, prefer to take taxis or subway.

Ask your concierge about activities for children nearby your hotel. Besides, you can visit Rio’s Zoo, the Botanical Garden, the Planetarium, and more.

→ Bring light clothes, sunscreen, and still, avoid sunlight between 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. — Rio’s summer (December-March) is generally hot and humid.
