Sugar Loaf Rio – Rock Climbing

Yes, you can rock-climb Sugar Loaf in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and no experience is required!

Without a doubt, the most adventurous way to reach the top of Sugar Loaf is by rock climbing. Costão is the easiest route for beginners because for part of the way, you can follow trails, leaving only a short distance up the face of the rock to actually climb. At some point, climbing gear is required, but significant previous climbing experience is not a prerequisite.

All you’ll need is lots of strength and energy to face the two and a half to three hours of steady climbing until you reach the summit of Sugar Loaf.

The best time of the day to climb Sugar Loaf is in the afternoon when the climbing part of the rock is in the shade. The best time of the year is from May to September when temperatures are mild in Rio de Janeiro.
