Christ the Redeemer Slums

There are no favelas (slums) really next to Christ the Redeemer statue atop Corcovado Mountain. However, you can see many slums in Rio de Janeiro literally anywhere you go, including, of course, from the Corcovado summit from where you see the statue as well as a 360° view of the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Although there are no slums really next to Christ the Redeemer statue, you can see some on the way to the statue. Whether you take the train or the minibus to the Christ statue, you may see slums (especially if you are on guided tour, since most professional tour guides raise the issue during their tours).

Note that the vast majority of people living in slums are people who work, earn a minimum wage (roughly US$ 300 per month), or a bit more, and can not afford a better place to live. You will come across slum residents not only at Christ the Redeemer, but all the time during your stay in Rio de Janeiro — and you will not even know.

Most gardeners, drivers, cleaning and kitchen staff, waiters, cashiers, and others are among the majority of people who live in the Rio de Janeiro slums.
