Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon Yellow Taxis

Copacabana is the most popular beach area in Rio de Janeiro (Ipanema is the trendiest). On either one there is plenty of yellow taxis and taxi agencies and companies. And the fares are reasonable.

As a visitor, you won’t have any difficulty in getting a taxi on the streets of Copacabana. In fact, many taxi drivers live way further in the outskirts of Rio, but drive down to Copacabana every day because there is where the taxi clientele is — tourists from abroad and from Brazil, retirees, and mainly Cariocas (natives of Rio) with a growing disposable income in the ever richer Brazil.

Even on Friday and Saturday nights will not be hard to hail a taxi (except, maybe, if it is raining). However, during Carnival days as well as right around December 31st things change. On those days the number of tourists visiting Rio de Janeiro exceeds one million. Expect, then, a few minutes of waiting for on empty taxi to stop by.

If you need a taxi to the airport on extreme peak days like the ones above mentioned, you better book in advance either though your hotel or a cab company/cooperative/service.

Taxis in Copacabana (and in most of Rio de Janeiro, especially in areas along the coast) are very safe. Crime against passengers (locals or tourists) is very unusual. In fact, taxi is the safest mode of transportation in Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, and in many other neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro (the subway is a safe as taxis).
