Vista from overlook on the way to Petropolis.
Petropolis is the closest and one of the most popular destinations for Cariocas (natives of Rio). Many of them travel to Petropolis, and self-tour for a full day before heading back to Rio de Janeiro.
Most foreign tourists take a day tour to Petropolis, usually an 8-hour guided tour organized by a Rio de Janeiro tour operator. However, independent travelers can also visit Petropolis by themselves.
A map is essential, though, to locate the main attractions in the city such as:
The Imperial Museum
The highlight of the city; a visit to this museum is the core reason to travel to Petrópolis.
Rua Teresa
A very popular shopping street, with great bargains (many Cariocas buy their winter clothes there).
The House of Santos Dumont
An ingenious house designed by the aviator Santos Dumont (in the Brazilian history, Santos Dumont is appointed as the inventor of the airplane).
The Beer Museum
This the most comprehensive museum about beers in Brazil. If you are a beer lover, you can’t miss a factory tour, and taste Bohemia, the oldest Brazilian beer.
Koeller Avenue
One of the most beautiful avenues in Petropolis; definitely worth a walking tour (on it is located the beautiful hotel “Pousada Imperial Koeller”)
The Crystal Palace
Built in France in 1884, inspired in the London’s Crystal Palace.
The Saint Peter of Alcantara Cathedral
An impressive and historic gothic cathedral.
Petropolis was built by Germans who settled down in the region. Hence, the European architecture that attracts the natives of Rio and Brazilians from other regions in the country.
Not only the architecture and the smaller village feel that attract visitors, but also the climate. Petropolis is usually several degrees colder than Rio de Janeiro, especially in the winter, autumn, and fall. This imperial city is 845 metres (2,700 feet) above sea level.
