Hiring a taxi driver for a day to tour and explore Rio de Janeiro is a safe, convenient and feasible option. There are more than 33.000 cabs in Rio de Janeiro, and the fare is reasonable (even cheaper than in many other lesser-known cities in Brazil).
A ride between neighborhoods that visitors are likely to visit vary from R$ 20 to R$ 30 (roughly 10 to US$ 15). The most expensive ride from the international airport to your hotel (in Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, or nearby) costs approximately R$ 60 (roughly US$ 30) on a licensed yellow taxi.
Many taxi drivers are used to be hired for a day, especially those in Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leme Beaches as well as others whose stands are located near hotels (also in other areas like Flamengo, Botafogo, and Leblon).
Since the subway line in Rio de Janeiro does not serve most tourist attractions, and considering that the local public bus system is not very foreign visitors-friendly, taxi becomes one of the best options to get around.
There are more than 33,000 taxis in Rio de Janeiro.
However, most drivers don’t speak not even a single word in English. That’s unlikely to change in the near future.
But communication won’t be much of an issue to tour Rio on a taxi! My Rio Travel Guide — the most practical travel guidebook to Rio de Janeiro — offers a full chapter dedicated to exploring Rio de Janeiro on a yellow cab. Besides detailed maps and itinerary to cover the top 16 attractions and sites in the city, the chapter includes a phrase guide with specific terms likely to be needed when communicating with a taxi driver.
But that’s not all. The chapter presents summarized English-Portuguese translations of each itinerary. In addition, there is plenty of clear information (such as cost/fares), suggestions, and tips to cover all that matters in a day and a half of sightseeing by taxi in Rio de Janeiro — safely, fast, and reasonably inexpensive.
My Rio Travel Guide goes beyond taxi tours and hiring a driver for the day in Rio de Janeiro. It covers other subjects that a wise visitor is eager to learn in advance such as safety issues, restaurants and bars, nightlife, accommodations, dos and don’ts in general, and more.
