How to check whether the Christ the Redeemer is covered by clouds?

You can see if the Christ the Redeemer statue is covered by clouds by looking toward Corcovado. The following locations in Rio de Janeiro present good vantage points for this purpose:

  • The canal separating Ipanema and Leblon beaches
  • The rooftops of many hotels in Copacabana and Ipanema
  • Urca or Sugar Loaf hills
  • Lagoa (the lagoon), on the Ipanema side

If it is a clear day and Christ the Redeemer statue is not obscured by clouds, don’t hesitate. Within a matter of hours (and possibly for the rest of the day or even the following day), the statue may become enveloped in clouds. Bottom line: plan to visit the statue as soon as you arrive in Rio de Janeiro so if it is not clear you still have another chance later that day or the following day.

Note: it can be cloudy on Copacabana or Ipanema Beaches while completely clear on top of Corcovado Mountain. By the same token, you can see a blue sky on Copacabana or Ipanema Beaches while it is cloudy on Corcovado summit.

A cloudy weather forecast does not necessarily mean that the Christ statue will be covered by clouds, nor does it mean that it will be clear. The same mindset is valid for a rainy day – you can visit the statue in the rain and yet see it and Rio de Janeiro perfectly well.
