Great for anytime, with little outdoor terrace on busy corner. Rua Jangadeiros with Rua Visconde de Pirajá – Ipanema – Rio de Janeiro. (Next door on Rua Jangadeiros, 28 is the up-scale Italian Terzetto Ristorante.)

2. Nik Sushi (Japanese cuisine)

Executive menu, buffet, or all-you-can-eat R$41-58; US$20.50-29; €18-25, depending on day and time. One of the most popular Japanese restaurants in Ipanema — Always busy! Rua Garcia D’Ávila, 83 – Ipanema – Rio de Janeiro. Mondays closed.

3. ¡Venga! (Spanish tapas bar)

Sangria, pata negra ham, squid, and other pricey Spanish appetizers! Rua Garcia D’Ávila, 147 – Ipanema – Rio de Janeiro. (As an alternative, try the cozy Via Sete or Alessandro & Frederico, a few steps away on the same sidewalk [both pasta and pizza places]).

      

4. Fiammetta (Italian and pizzaria)

Excellent value. Regular menu and very good lunch buffet at R$33; US$16.50; €14 per person Mon. – Fri. (R$44; US$22; €19 on weekends and holidays). Dinner buffer at R$37; US$18.50; €16 on any night. One of the best pizzas in Rio. Rua Aníbal de Mendonça, 132 – Ipanema – Rio de Janeiro.

5. Le Vin Bistro (French cuisine)

Classic French cuisine restaurant for lunch or dinner: confit duck, cassoulet, steak tartare, crème brûlée, petit gateau, etc. Rua Barão da Torre, 490 – Ipanema – Rio de Janeiro.

6. Real Kebab (Arabic cuisine)

A tiny Arabic restaurant which serves Kafta, Falafel and more. Rua Teixeira de Melo, 53 – Ipanema – Rio de Janeiro. (Next to it, Papa Gui Pizzerie.)
