Hang-glider pilot and passenger to take off in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The list of places, scenic overlooks, activities, attractions, sights and sounds not to be missed in Rio de Janeiro is endless. There are really many things to do, see, and try — especially if you are open-minded in absorbing part of the local culture.
Here is a random and very limited list of the not to be missed when visiting Rio de Janeiro.
Activity — Hang gliding
Landing on Pepino Beach in Rio de Janeiro.
Jumping off a 500-metre (1,500-foot) ramp above sea level, tandem hang gliding around 10 minutes, and landing safe and sound on Pepino Beach in Sao Conrado is one of the not to be missed activities in Rio de Janeiro.
Even those travelers who are afraid of heights feel the fear and do it anyway. And no regrets! The experience can be registered by the pilot’s camera and camcorder, previously attached in the equipment, and controlled by a remote device along the flight.
Upon landing, you can see the film and photos of your very own flight. The tandem flight costs R$ 350 (roughly US$ 180); it costs a bit more if you want to buy the photos and the DVD video.
If you want to do some unforgettable adventure in Rio de Janeiro, do not miss hang gliding.
Sightseeing — The Ruins Park
Vista from Ruins Park in Santa Teresa, Rio de Janeiro.
The Ruins Park is a colonial mansion in Santa Teresa, Rio’s most charming neighborhood.
The Park is basically an area with an outdoor patio with a cafe, an art gallery, and a great scenic lookout overlooking downtown, Lapa Arches, the metropolitan cathedral, Sugar Loaf, a favela, Christ the Redeemer, and Santa Teresa itself.
The vistas are incredible and well worth the steps up to the summit of the not to be missed lookout.
Eating and Drinking — Bar Urca
Appetizers and cold beer at Bar Urca in Rio.
Bar Urca is one of the most popular hangouts in Rio de Janeiro, where only the savvy locals go! It is crowded on the weekends and public holiday afternoons — and that’s the best time to go.
The place is very casual, popular for a savoury such as pastel or bolinho de bacalhau or a seafood broth, accompanied by a caipirinha or a Brazilian beer such as Brahma, Skol, or Antarctica. Not to be missed!
