There are several safe hotels in Rio de Janeiro. As a matter of fact, the overwhelming majority of hotels in Rio de Janeiro are safe. (Note: recommended hotels are listed in My Rio Travel Guide — the most useful travel guidebook to Rio).
Bear in mind that Rio is not as dangerous as you may think — remember that one occasional single bad event can travel fast and turn out to be ‘news’ while the good, safe, ordinary everyday life in Rio is usually not reported internationally.
Back to safety inside hotels. Most good hotels in Rio de Janeiro are guarded, monitored by a surveillance system, and therefore safe. Hotel employees are in general honest people working hard to make a living.
Taking somehow advantage of tourists is probably not in the mind of the vast majority of the hotel employees, so as a tourist in a good hotel in Rio de Janeiro, you are more likely to be welcome and well-treated all stay long.

How safe is outside the hotels in Rio de Janeiro? Again, outside the hotels in Rio de Janeiro is generally safe. In fact, you will feel safe in the Rio de Janeiro international airport (GIG), at your hotel, at restaurants, attractions, beaches, and in many other areas that are busy with pedestrians, tourists, and Cariocas (natives of Rio).
Remove the ‘hotel safety’ thought of your mind and, instead, make sure to put aside a decent budget to stay in a nice hotel (preferably near the beach) in a popular, busy, and safe area such as Copacabana or Ipanema. Be aware that hotels in Rio de Janeiro are not cheap.
