Subway station near Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro

There is no subway stop really near to Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. The statue is located atop Corcovado Mountain, 710 meters (2,343 feet) above sea level, and there is no metro line that takes tourists to the summit of the mountain.

However, there is a cog train line that takes visitors from Cosme Velho Neighborhood (almost at sea level) all the way up to the top of Corcovado Mountain, where you see Christ the Redeemer statue right in front of you (as well as you have a panoramic and breath-taking view of most of Rio de Janeiro).

There is no underground subway line that you can take to the Corcovado Train Station in Cosme Velho Neighborhood either. The subway station Largo do Machado (in Flamengo Neighborhood) is the closest one to the train station. Some tourists get off at Largo do Machado subway stop and take a bus to the train station. Others walk the 2.6 kilometers (1.6 miles) around 30 to 40 minutes to get to the train station.

This section between Largo do Machado subway stop and the train station to Corcovado is very busy with pedestrians, shops and the regular noise of a city with more than 6 million inhabitants. It is worth walking at daytime on weekdays and Saturdays.

You will not be using the subway in Rio de Janeiro as much as you would do in other cities in Europe. There are basically three lines, and few stations are near major tourist attractions. However, there are subway stops in districts where tourists usually stay at such as Copacabana, Ipanema, Catete, Glória, Botafogo and Flamengo.
