Walking from my hotel in Copacabana to Sugar Loaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro

Sugar Loaf is just a few minutes by taxi from Copacabana in Rio de JaneiroSugar Loaf is not far — it is right in Rio de Janeiro. If you like walking, you can even walk from Copacabana, Leme, Leblon or Ipanema to Sugar Loaf Mountain.

Sugar Loaf is 5.8 kilometers (3.6 miles) from Copacabana (calculated from Copacabana Fort — the farthest side) and 8.2 kilometers (5 miles) from Ipanema (calculated from the border with Leblon — the farthest side). However, the vast majority of visitors go visiting Sugar Loaf either by taxi or on an organized tour.

Alternatively, you can walk or bicycle up to the box office where you can buy the tickets to the cable cars to Sugar Loaf.  If you rent a bike, you will also need to rent a locker along with the bike.

Whether you bicycle or walk to Sugar Loaf, prefer to go early for at least two reasons: 1) you arrive before the crowds, and 2) before it gets too hot and humid. Beware that Rio summer (end of December though end of March) hits 30-35 C° (88-98 F°) every day. Many spring, fall and winter days are also hot (although not as hot as in the summer).
