What are the Christ statue’s measurements?

The total height of the Christ statue in Rio de Janeiro is 38 metres (125 feet), of which eight metres (26 feet) is the granite pedestal and 30 metres (98 feet) the statue itself.

The total weight is 1,145 tons (the equivalent of approximately 16,000 human beings of 70 kilograms or 154 pounds). The head weighs 30 tons, measures 3.75 metres (12 feet) and leans forward five percent. Each hand weighs eight tons.

The plateau where the Christ the Redeemer statue is located is 477 square metres (5,103 square feet).

How strong is Christ the Redeemer statue?

The statue was built several times stronger than other similar constructions in Brazil (such as 13-storey buildings), to better resist bad weather. The statue does not shake or oscillate – it is deeply cemented into the Corcovado granite.

What is that metal structure coming out of the upper part of the head, arms, and hands of the statue?

The metal structures that protrude from the upper part of the head, arms, and hands are part of the lightning rods. The statue’s lightning protection system is one of the largest in Rio de Janeiro and has been very efficient year after year.

In the summer, lightning hits the statue several times each month. By the way, Brazil is the country with the largest number of lighting strikes in the world, with over 60 million a year!
