Information about Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

It is of paramount importance to get as much information as possible about Carnival in Rio de Janeiro before travelling to Brazil, not to miss important events.

Rio’s famous Carnival is a four-day/four-night party that begins each year on the Friday night before Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) and ends at noon on the following Wednesday (Ash Wednesday). It draws every year almost one million Brazilians from all over the country and foreigners from all continents.

The main disadvantage of visiting the city during this time is that most hotels charge double (with a four-day stay required minimum). However, to enjoy Carnival does not make much difference which hotel you stay, so you can lower your standards, and choose one that fits your budget, and get ready to witness one of the most vibrant parties in the world!

Most tourists watch the Carnival parade at the Sambadrome for one night (one is enough) and attend Carnival street parties and balls (in Copacabana, Ipanema, or nearby) on the other days and nights.

Carnival parade tickets for seats with a good view cost about R$500; US$250; €217 per night (9 p.m. to 5 a.m.) and should be bought in advance.

Safety at Sambadrome and at Rio de Janeiro Carnival Street Parties

The street parties are safe, although the larger they are, the more you should plan a strategy not to loose your belongings: money belt big enough for an ID, small camera, cash and one credicard.

The Sambadrome parade experience is very safe; and this stadium is only about 10 km (6 miles) from Copacabana. Some ticket sellers include transportation in the ticket price.

Carnival start dates: Feb. 9-12, 2013; March 1-4, 2014; Feb. 14-17, 2015.
