Best time to photograph Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado, Rio de Janeiro

Evidently, there is a best time of the day to photograph Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado Mountain, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  However, there are a few issues to be considered before getting to the statue to take the perfect photos.  If photography is important for you while travelling in Rio, keep reading this page.

Visibility and weather conditions

There is no specific time of the day or the month that is guaranteed to have a clear statue right in front of you. A cloud frequently covers the statue up to the point of blocking the visibility of the monument and of Rio de Janeiro. In other words, you can stand right in front of the statue and not take one single photo because you just don’t see the Jesus statue a few steps from you.

It is not unusual to see visitors holding their cameras waiting the cloud to dissipate to finally photograph the statue and the breath-taking views of Rio. The point is that sometimes it does not dissipate for hours, if at all, on a given day.  Hence, it is mandatory to check the weather forecast, but above all, take a look towards Corcovado Mountain to confirm how clear the statue is before taking a taxi or a bus to head to the top of Corcovado Mountain.

Photographing it when the sun is on the Christ statue’s face

The sunlight hits the monument’s front in the morning. Hence, this is the best time of the day to photograph it. However, end of the afternoon is not bad either, especially because the sunlight is over Rio de Janeiro and Sugar Loaf.

What camera to bring to Christ the Redeemer statue

You can take your very best camera and lens to photograph Christ the Redeemer and Rio de Janeiro from the top of Corcovado Mountain. The top of the mountain (where the statue is located), the train (and its train stations), and the minibus shuttle (and its parking areas) are very safe.
