Can I get married in the Christ the Redeemer’s chapel in Rio?

Yes, you can get married in the Christ the Redeemer’s chapel atop Corcovado Mountain, at 710 meters above sea level.

The first wedding in the tiny little chapel took place after its re-inauguration in 2006. Since then, dozens of couples have paid the R$2,300; US$1,150; €1,000 fee (includes ornamentation) to get married in the chapel underneath the towering structure. Many of those who marry in that chapel are foreigners who marry Brazilians. Weddings are on Saturdays and Sundays at 5:00 p.m.

The disadvantages (or advantages) of those couples marrying at Christ Statue’s chapel is that they cannot invite many guests, and the bride has to arrive by cog train, and then must get on an elevator followed by an escalator ride!

Despite these issues, there is a waiting list of about two to three months to marry on Corcovado. Because this is an amazing Rio de Janeiro experience, there is no doubt that the demand will certainly grow.

Further information about how to get married on the summit of Corcovado Mountain can be obtained inChrist the Redeemer Statue – A Comprehensive Guidebook to Visiting the Rio de Janeiro Landmark atop Corcovado Mountain.

It should be noted that if both parties are foreigners living outside Brazil, there are many bureaucratic requirements that need to be addressed. The obvious requirement is that both parties be single and Catholic.

Other requirements include obtaining documents from your Catholic church (translated into Portuguese) as well as documents from your city hall (also translated into Portuguese). These documents should be sent to the Christ the Redeemer Sanctuary at least two months prior to the wedding date.

Can I get baptized in the Christ the Redeemer’s chapel?

Yes. The first baptism after the chapel re-inauguration was in 2007. Baptisms at Christ the Redeemer should be booked well in advance and although baptisms are free, donations are expected.
