Technically, you can walk to Christ the Redeemer statue atop Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro. However, it is not recommended for two main reasons:
1 – A good section of the Corcovado road along the forest up to the Christ statue has no sidewalk, so you have to walk on the edge of the road and monitor the traffic all the time.
2 – There are almost no pedestrians walking up to the Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado Mountain, and although the route is not particularly unsafe, the general rule in Rio de Janeiro is to be where people are and walk where other people walk.
In addition, you do not save the minibus ticket if you hike all the way up to the statue because you still need to buy it to get access to the statue area, whether or not you take the minibus. However, there is a trail through the forest that leads to the statue. For that option, a guided tour is recommended.

There is plenty of walking options in Rio de Janeiro — you don’t need to be limited to the road to Christ the Redeemer statue. You can safely walk at the following districts in Rio: Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Leme, Urca, and Lagoa.
