Here are some quick, interesting and fun facts about Christ the Redeemer statue:

  •  Was a French priest who came to live in Rio de Janeiro who had the idea of building the statue of Christ the Redeemer (the interesting and regretful fact is that it took so long for the idea to be implemented that he eventually died before the statue’s construction).
  •  The statue of Christ the Redeemer was built with money donated by locals. In the 1920s, the Catholic Church sent volunteers all around Rio de Janeiro to ask for donations.
  • A French sculptor was hired to design in France the head and the hands of the statue, and after finishing the job, ship them to Rio de Janeiro (the fun fact is that he apparently was not really interested on what he sculptured since he has never been to Rio and has never seen the real full-size statue, and despite of it, his family back in France was claiming the monument image rights).
  • The Christ the Redeemer has lightning rods on the top of the head, on the arms and hands (the statue is hit by lightnings dozens of times in the summer).
