Visiting Christ the Redeemer statue on a budget

Visiting the Christ statue atop Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro on a budget is relatively easy, although not that cheap since public transportation is expensive (so is the little train that takes visitors up to the statue area). In fact, bear in mind that Rio is not a cheap city, although if you are a budget-conscious traveler you will find several ways to have a great time spending little money.

Budget option 1 – Visiting Christ statue by subway and by bus

Assuming that you are coming from Copacabana or Ipanema: Take the subway direction “Praça Saens Penã” or “Pavuna” (one-way at R$3.20; US$1.60; €1.40), to Largo do Machado Station. From there take bus # 422 or 498 direction “Cosme Velho” (10-12-minute ride). (This is a good option particularly if you want to experience Rio de Janeiro subway — clean, safe and reliable — one of the most modern in Brazil [although the subway is not the cheapest budget transportation option]).

Alternatively, save the bus fare and walk about 30 to 40 minutes from Largo do Machado subway station to the Corcovado Train Station. Then, take the train up to the statue.

Budget option 2 – Visiting Christ statue by bus only

Take # 583 at bus stop BRS 2 on Ataulfo de Paiva Avenue (Leblon), Visconde de Pirajá Street (Ipanema), or N. S. Copacabana Avenue (Copacabana). Whatever bus you take (following budget option 1 or 2), get off at the final stop and walk two minutes back to the Corcovado Train Station, and take the train up to visit Christ statue. A one-way bus ride costs R$2.75; US$1.35; €1.20.

The cheapest way to get to Christ the Redeemer statue would be skipping the train and walking all the way up to Paineiras, where you can take the minibus that also take tourists to the statue. The minibus is relatively cheaper than the train — depending on the day it costs half price.
